Count what the chat window cannot do

People assume the chat window is the product and the agent apps are an extra. It is the other way around. The chat window runs the same models you would get anywhere else, so the gap has nothing to do with intelligence. It is about access. Sitting in a browser tab, the model cannot open a file on your computer. It cannot take an action inside Slack, Drive, your calendar, or your CRM. It stops the moment you close the tab and forgets the session. It cannot begin work on a schedule while you sleep. It cannot break a heavy job into pieces and run several workers on them at once. And when it finishes, you get text that you copy somewhere else by hand rather than a finished spreadsheet or deck. That is six capabilities, all included in the plan you already pay for, none of them reachable from where most people spend their time. This is where the sense of paying for something and receiving a chatbot comes from. You are receiving a chatbot. The rest is one app away.

Claude Cowork left the laptop in July

Cowork launched in January 2026 as a desktop app, and Anthropic built it for people who do not write code. You hand Claude a task and it works across your files, your calendar, your email, your messaging app, the web, and whatever else you connect, until the job is finished. It splits heavy work across parallel sub-agents on its own, without you naming or configuring anything. On July 7, 2026, the architecture changed. Cowork became reachable from claude.ai in any browser and from the sidebar of the Claude app on iOS and Android, in beta, starting with Max subscribers. The platform expansion got the headlines, but the execution model is the real change: sessions now run remotely on Anthropic servers and save to your account, so a task keeps going after you shut your laptop and scheduled work fires with no device online at all. Chat and Cowork also moved under one home, with a single sidebar, a single search, and one place for your projects and artifacts. Anthropic doubled Cowork usage limits through August 5 to give people room to test it, which tells you how much they want the habit to form.

ChatGPT Work landed two days later

On July 9, 2026, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work. You give it an outcome. It gathers context across your connected apps, plans the approach, breaks the job into smaller steps, and stays with the project for hours, working independently. What it returns is the part that matters: finished sheets, slides, docs, and shareable web apps rather than a chat reply you have to turn into a document yourself. It connects to your working life through plugins covering Slack, Microsoft Teams, Google Drive, SharePoint, email, calendars, CRMs, and project trackers, and it decides on its own when to reference one, though you can point it at a specific app by typing the at sign followed by the app name. Task scheduling lets you start something from your phone and pick up the progress at your desk later. The launch also rebuilt the desktop app on Mac and Windows, merging Chat, Work, and Codex into one place, with the previous app renamed ChatGPT Classic. It runs on GPT-5.6, where Sol handles the hardest work, Terra covers everyday tasks, and Luna is the cost-efficient option, and a max setting exists for problems where getting it right outweighs getting it fast.

Two competitors, one architecture, 48 hours apart

Read the two launches next to each other. Anthropic says Cowork is where you hand Claude a task and it works across your files, calendar, email, messaging app, the web, and the other tools you connect until the job is done. OpenAI says Work moves beyond answering questions to getting real work done across web, mobile, and desktop. Same description, different logo, 48 hours apart. When two competitors converge that precisely, the argument about what the product should be is over. Both companies now treat the chat box as the entry point and the agent as the thing they are actually selling, and both put the work in the cloud so it survives you closing your machine. That leaves a practical question rather than a strategic one: what do you delegate first? Pick one task you repeat every week that involves files, and hand the whole folder over rather than pasting pieces into a chat. Start with work where a mistake costs nothing, meaning read, summarize, cross-reference, compile. Live with the output for a week and read it critically. Once its judgment has earned it, move on to actions that write things, like filing documents, updating sheets, and drafting messages. Two honest notes before you start. Both sit behind paid plans, Cowork on web and mobile is still in beta with Max first, and ChatGPT Work rolled out to Pro, Enterprise, and Edu ahead of Plus and Business. And an agent run burns considerably more of your usage than a chat message does, which is the real reason to delegate one thing properly instead of five things carelessly.
